Shropshire village, 3 miles E of Wem.
The village is dominated by the Hawkstone estate. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) visited Hawkstone on one of his tours and was lavish in his praise of the house and, especially, the park with its caves, precipices and grottos. Hawkstone is also claimed to be the setting for an Arthurian poem, Sir Lancelot and Sir Turquine, which is included in The Reliques of Ancient English Poetry collected by Thomas Percy (1729-1811).
