Warwickshire is home to Birmingham, a city second only to London in its size. The city has always played an important part in the industrial development of the West Midlands and in its literary development. The area offers a long list of writers born and bred in Birmingham, and an almost equally long one of those writers who have settled here. Amongst Birmingham's writers are Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), William Hutton (1723-1815), his daughter Catherine Hutton (1756-1846) through to J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) and David Lodge (1935 - ) who lives and teaches in Birmingham. Warwickshire also includes the area of Stratford-upon-Avon, forever synonymous with our literary heritage through William Shakespeare (1564-1616).
Below you will find a list of some towns and villages of Warwickshire. The places, and their literary connections, are described on separate pages.
