Staffordshire town, 24 miles SE of Stafford.
Historically important as a seat of King Offa and a Royal Mint. The Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel held the local seat in Parliament and there is a statue of him outside the Town Hall. The castle has a Norman motte and bailey with later Tudor and Jacobean additions.
The town is the setting for Be a falling leaf (1988), a novel by Bob Bibby.
