Shropshire town, 12 miles NW of Wolverhampton.
The bibliographer Beriah Botfield (1807-1863) lived at nearby Decker Hall.
The satirist Thomas Brown (1663-1704) may have been born in the town.
Mary Augusta Ward (1851-1920), better known as Mrs. Humphrey Ward, spent three or four less than idyllic years in Shifnal as a pupil at the Rock Terrace School For Young Ladies.
P. G. Wodehouse (1881-1975) knew this part of the county well and it seems likely that Shifnal was the place he had in mind for his fictional Market Blandings.
