Rugby

Warwickshire town, 11 miles E of Coventry.

Many literary figures were educated at Rugby School, founded 1567, including the poet and essayist Walter Savage Landor (1775-1864) and the novelist Thomas Hughes (1822-1896). Rose Macaulay (1881-1958) was the daughter of a master at the school and was born here.

The poet Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) was born in Rugby. His father was a housemaster at Rugby School which Rupert attended until going to Cambridge University in 1906.

John Moultrie (1799-1874) was Rector of Rugby from 1825. He had some fame as a poet, as did two of his children, Gerald Moultrie (1829-1885) and Mary Moultrie.

Joanna Toye (1957- ), freelance writer and regular scriptwriter on long running BBC radio series The Archers, was born in Rugby and has lived in the West Midlands for most of her life.
