Staffordshire village, 3 miles NW of Leek.
Nearby, Rudyard Lake is a beauty spot, even though it is was originally a reservoir especially constructed to supply the Trent and Mersey Canal. Here a young Lockwood Kipling and his fiancée Alice Macdonald used to walk together and they decided to name their son after this romantic spot. Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), poet, novelist and short-story writer, was, in fact, born in Bombay, but his fame has made the name of this Staffordshire village well known all over the world.
