Resources for teachers

The Shropshire Routes to Roots website is intended for anyone with an interest in Shropshire and its heritage. However, having been designed in consultation with teachers and education advisors, it is expected that the website will be a particularly useful resource for teachers and learners. In particular, the site should provide extensive supporting content for the National Curriculum for History, as well as content for teaching citizenship.

Indexes to educational content

To start finding educational resources on Shropshire Routes to Roots, choose the appropriate link:

This will give a list of those themes which are especially suitable for a particular group and which may directly support units from the DFES Schemes of Work. Several of these themes have specially tailored resources for teachers and their pupils, including glossaries and worksheets. In addition, the Teacher's resources page at the end of individual themes should provide ideas for creating new activities in relation to the material and sources.

National Curriculum

More generally, because each theme is broken down into small pages, which usually study events in the order in which they occurred, the themes can promote chronological understanding. 'Timeline' themes, where available, further support this. The digitised archive resources have been selected to be interesting, challenging and diverse. They should encourage historical enquiry and enable pupils to find out about events, people and changes from an appropriate range of sources. The worksheets and quizzes offer pre-prepared ways of engaging pupils in organisation and communication of material.

Other resources

The lists of resources for teachers are not exclusive, giving only a portion of the total content available on Shropshire Routes to Roots. You may find other useful material which is not given here. Browse through the various packages (under the 'Explore' heading in the sidebar) and use the Site search facility.

If you do find other pages particularly useful in class, please contact Routes to Roots so that they may be added to the lists of resources for teachers.
