Where can you find more information about the Civil War?

Introduction

This theme has provided a very brief snapshot of a single source from a single period of the Civil War. The Mysteries and evidence page explains some of the ambiguities surrounding 'Cromwell's' letter:

  • Was Cromwell really in Chester on July 16th, 1649?
  • Could the Ludlow Quarter Sessions reveal what really happened to James Smith?
  • What did Cromwell's handwriting and signature usually look like?

You could now do your own research into the letter. The challenge of finding answers to these questions is yours!

More broadly, the natural follow-up to the letter is to find-out what happened to the country after July 1649, after this letter was written. To do further research into the fascinating but complex historical topic of the Civil War, you may find the following resources useful.
