Ideas and resources for using this theme in the classroom

National Curriculum

The Remembrance theme has been written to tie in with Key Stage 1, Unit 17 of the Schemes of Work for History. It may also provide supporting resources for Citizenship, Key Stage 3, Unit 11 and Key Stage 3, Unit 13.

Although only the more capable children may be able to use theme unaided, using the approaches and worksheets the theme can be used in the classroom, to generate discussion and activities on the topic of Remembrance Day.

Note that all these pages have been designed to be 'printer-friendly', making it easy to distribute paper versions of pages to a class.

Approaches for Key Stage 1

One way of using the theme is suggested below. You may find it helpful to give pupils a copy of the glossary (Opens in a new window) before starting:

  • Discuss the meaning of anniversaries and remembrance symbols and events, using the tasks on the Anniversaries and Symbols page as a starting point.
  • Go through the gallery of poppy history images (opens in a new window) used on the History of Poppies page. Explain that the war lasted a long time, that soldiers from all over the world fought in the war, and that many people died. Explain that poppies came to represent hope on the bleak battlefields.
  • Go through the gallery of Remembrance Day and Memorial images (opens in a new window) used on the Remembrance Day page. Point out that memorials appear throughout the country and across the world. Show how different ceremonies and memorials share common characteristics.
  • The Studying Memorials page is designed to give pupils the ability to study a memorial, if they are unable to visit one in person. The smaller thumbnail images link to larger pages which have simple tasks or which can form the basis for class discussion.
  • Alternatively, arrange a visit to a local memorial. Print off the task-sheet on the Visit a Memorial page. Show what the characteristics of a memorial indicate about the war.
