What can we learn from a memorial about the war?

Background

Shropshire has 589 war memorials, so there is likely to be a memorial in your area. Find your nearest memorial. Then print out this page, which is 'printer friendly', and use the tasks in your visit.

When you get back to school, talk about these things:

  • Where was the memorial? Why do we have different memorials in different towns or villages?
  • Look at the dates you found. What war does the memorial remember?
  • Did many surnames appear more than once? How would you have felt if you were in a family which lost many people?
  • Was there a wreath at the memorial? Why is it there?
