Why do we wear badges?

Introduction

Every year on your birthday you probably wear a badge. But have you ever seen other people wearing different types of badge? You may have seen some one wearing a red ribbon, or a daffodil, or even a red poppy.

Why do you think we wear badges like these?

Remembering

a) There are many events that we remember every year. Look at the boxes below.

In the boxes on the left are words which might remind you of an event which might happen every year.

Draw a picture which reminds you of that word.

Write down an event which the picture reminds you of. Choose from...Halloween, Christmas, Hanukkah, Bonfire Night

b) Draw a badge that reminds you of your birthday.

Write on the badge the date when you were born.

Your birthday is an anniversary. It happens every year. It is a day when you remember your birth, which happened in the past.

c) Badges and the pictures you drew are symbols. They are pictures which remind us of something. We use symbols to help us to remember important events in the past. They may be events like our birthday which happened to us. They may be events which happened to other people.

Poppies are a special type of symbol. They remember an event in the past.
