How can we find out about individual soldiers and family members during the First World War?

The Telegram sent from the Home Office to the Chief Constable of the county of Salop, informing him of the outbreak of war, 5th August, 1914.

The First World War had a direct affect on nearly every family in the United Kingdom. It's possible that members of your family were involved. This theme will explore how we can find out more about individual soldiers and family members during the First World War. All the historical documents used on this website can be found at Shropshire Archives (Opens in a new window). If you are interested in seeing any of the documents used here, you can visit Shropshire Archives and quote the reference number.

If there's anything you don't understand, try looking at the Glossary, you might find an explanation there. New words and historical terms are underlined and in bold, and link directly to their entry in the Glossary.

On the reverse of this photograph it says, "The Pals 1914-1918". We can assume that this refers to the 6th Battalion, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, as they were known as "the Pals". Somewhere in this picture is probably A. P. Higley, who we'll learn about later. The photograph was taken at the Quarry, Shrewsbury.
