1a. Children in wartime: How were we to protect ourselves from the bombs?

There was great concern before war was declared, and in the early months, that there would be huge loss of civilian life from air attacks. Air power had only been used for the first time in the First World War (1914-1918). Nobody really knew how many people were at risk.

One of the preparations for the outbreak of war made by Shropshire County Council was to encourage people to build air raid shelters. These boys from LLanyfllan have taken this to heart and have made and designed their own shelter.

  • What do you think the sand bags were to be used for?
  • Do you think that their use was effective?
