Where can I find trade directories?

Introduction

Below is a list of places, both in on and offline, where you could find original or digitised trade directories, as well as more information about them. Note that all links will open in a new browser window.

Digitised directories

Thanks to the donation of material from Dr. Trevor G. Hill, you can access four Excel spreadsheets which contain information extracted from trade directories. If requested, choose to 'Open the file from its current location':

Elsewhere on this site, you will find a collection of extracts from three trade directories of 1821-1822, 1850 and 1895, focusing on Shropshire, Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Drayton and Broseley:

Offline sources

Shropshire Archives (ask for reference: C67), Oswestry Library and Ludlow Library and Museum Resource Centre all hold trade directories relating to Shropshire.

For more information on the digitised directories of carriers and coaches used in this theme, see the following book, which is available from Shropshire Archives, reference qC25:
Trevor G. Hill, "From Packhorse to Railway: Changing transport systems from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries and their impact upon trade and industry in the Shropshire area", unpublished PhD, Department of English Local History, University of Leicester, 1998.

Online sources

As is the case for all external links on this website, these links will open in a new browser window.

Address Description
Digital Library of Historical Directories A searchable digitised collection of directories for counties across England.
