The area is 859,516 acres. The population in 1801 was 169,248; in 1811, 184,973; in 1821, 198,311; in 1831, 213,518; in 1841, 225,820; in 1851, 229,341; in 1861, 240,959; in 1871, 248,111; in 1881, 248,014; and in 1891, 236,339.

The number of males in 1891 was 116,736, and of females, 119,603; the number of houses in 1891, inhabited, was 49,686.
