6. Further information
Where can I find more information about
how to do research and use sources?
Introduction
Further information pages (like this one) can be found at the
end of most of the themes on Shropshire Routes to Roots. These
will give you guidance as to which books, internet and places to
go to next to research a particular topic (for example, coal
mining in Shropshire or World War Two).
In the case of this Source guide, for information on how to
find and use sources the following resources are recommended.
Places and people
The following contacts are especially useful for gathering
ideas and sources for your research:
-
Shropshire Archives (formerly the Records and Research
Centre) in Shrewsbury holds the major collection of published and
original records of the history of Shropshire. You can also pick
up a series of leaflets which go into more detail about the
sources available and how to use them in your research.
-
Shropshire County Libraries (opens in a new window) have
their own local studies collections, as well as books and
literature on Shropshire's history. In particular, Oswestry
Library has the largest local studies collection outside of
Shropshire Archives.
- Shropshire has many museums and galleries to inspire and
inform your own research. See the Places to Visit
page for information on some of the County's attractions.
- Personal contact. Many of the themes on Shropshire Routes to
Roots could not have been created without the help of local
historians and volunteers. Do not underestimate the value of
someone who has already researched a field in depth. Talk to your
friends and family.
Books
The following books are a starting point for finding your own
material. They have bibliographies to other, more comprehensive
books on specific subjects, such as reading maps or censuses.
- Robert Douch, Local History and the Teacher,
Routledge, 1967 [Shropshire Archive reference: 375.942]
- Janet Foster and Julia Sheppard (ed.), British
Archives, Palgrave, 2002 [Shropshire Archive reference:
O26; an index of UK archives and record offices and their
collections]
- Philip Riden, Local History: A Handbook for
Beginners, Batsford Academic and Educational Ltd., 1983
[Shropshire Archive reference: 941]
