1. Welcome to the Memory bank

Introduction

History is made up not of dates, events and facts but by people. Split the word 'History' in two, and you get 'His-story', the story of men and women.

Throughout the Shropshire Routes to Roots website, you will find anecdotes, tales and local memories which illustrate what life was like for the ordinary people of Shropshire. In addition to these, this Memory bank collection is a place where more extensive personal recollections have been recorded by the project.

The memories are arranged under four topics, of which only the World Wars and Changing transport currently hold any recollections.

Editing policy

Most of the memories on the following pages were transcribed from conversations. The transcripts have been edited to help with their clarity and continuity when written as text. As far as possible, however, the 'feel' of the text is true to the original conversations.

Pieces of text in square brackets [like this] indicate where words have been added afterwards in order to clarify a point made by a speaker. Three dots (called an ellipsis...) indicate where something has been left out.

Contribute your memories

To contribute your memories, get in touch with the Routes to Roots team. Use the contact Routes to Roots page to find out how.
