What evidence remains of the role played by the hospital during the Second World War?

The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital has a selection of interesting sources and artefacts in its Archive. Some of the sources date back to the early 1900's and Agnes Hunt's work at Florence House in Baschurch.

Of particular interest in the Archive is the anaesthetic log book dating from during the Second World War.

An anaesthetic log book is the book into which the details of every operation performed at the hospital were noted down. Including:

  • The name of the patient
  • The name of the surgeon
  • Date of surgery
  • The nature of the injury
  • Details of the surgery/treatment
  • Any medication received

Not surprisingly, during the war, a large number of the operations taking place at the Orthopaedic were involved with treating soldiers suffering from gun shot wounds, soft tissue and nerve injuries.
