Word Meaning
Abattoir Another name for a slaughterhouse
Affliction The cause of suffering or unhappiness
Alms Charitable donations of money
Anaesthesia A loss of feeling or sensation
Ancestors A person from whom we are directly descended. Relatives who were alive before us.
Antibiotics Chemical substances produced by micro-organisms such as fungi which has the power to prevent the growth of bacteria
Consumption This is another name for Tuberculosis affecting the lungs
Contagious When a disease can be passed from one individual to the next
Decree A law, order or judgement made by someone in authority
Dedication To devote to a special purpose often used in a religious sense to God
Dehydration To loose water or bodily fluids
Effluent A liquid which is discharged as a waste product, for example sewage
Epidemic A disease which spreads rapidly through a community
Eradication To get rid of, to stamp out
Foundation To begin, or to start off
Immunity The ability to resist disease
Incubation The time a disease takes to first show its appearance after exposure to the disease
Institution An organisation or establishment set up for a particular purpose
Legislation The act of making laws, the creation of a legal document
Moral The distinction between good and evil
Mutilation To damage or maim the body
Lazar Relating to Lazarus, who was a Leper
Orthopaedic The branch of surgery which is concerned with the repair of bones and joints
Ostracised To exclude or banish someone
Purgatory A place of suffering or torment. This is where the soul was believed to go to pay for sins committed during life
Remedies A medicine or potion which was used to cure an affliction
Sanatorium An institution for the care of the chronically sick
Sanitation Cleanand hygienic conditions that help prevent disease through services such as garbage collection and wastewater disposal.
Segregation A means of separating people
Thoracic Relating to the thorax, the chest area of the body
Transmitted A disease which has been passed on
Vaccination The introduction into the skin, of the cowpox virus, to induce immunity against smallpox
Variolation To infect with a minute amount of the smallpox virus
Victim A person who suffers some sort of harm
