7a. Worksheet: Making a newspaper
This page gives instructions for making an historical newspaper containing stories about mining and industry. Using Microsoft Word, this task allows pupils to create their own unique 'newspaper' front page.
- Open up the file Newspaper template (MS Word document. If asked, choose to 'Open this file from its current location'). This is a blank template which shows areas where headlines, stories and pictures may be placed.
- Print out this file on A3 paper. If you do not have access to an A3 printer, reduce the size of the page to A4 and print out on two pages.
- Open the file Newspaper collections [Large File: 2.8MB] (MS Word document. If asked, choose to 'Open this file from its current location'). This file has collections of images, different headlines and stories.
- Print out all the pages of this document, photocopy, and distribute them to a class or group of pupils. Now pupils can create their own newspaper by choosing headlines, stories and pictures, and cutting and sticking these to the template.
- Pupils do not have to stick to one layout of the text or headlines. Paragraphs could be cut in two, pictures cropped, or headlines split into two lines.
- Note that this task could be done in an IT session, by cutting and pasting between the two documents, or by adding their own text.
