The American DreamThe American Dream was not just a vague idea, thought up by writers and politicians. For many people America genuinely was a land of new freedom and opportunity, in contrast to which Britain seemed a stale and unfair environment. In Britain, the working man could earn enough money to survive, but he was always only a sacking or redundancy away from poverty. By contrast, emigrating to America meant starting out with nothing and living a sometimes difficult existence; however, the chance eventually to become a self-made man made this a worthwhile risk.
