However I can tell you one thing that I think you may stop in England till you are Ninety and Nine and you will never be worth anything and what is worse than all you don't know from one week to the other whether you will keep a situation or not for if a man gives the least offence then he must be discharged and I think a man is eternally dread of a Tyranical Master

The American Dream

The American Dream was not just a vague idea, thought up by writers and politicians. For many people America genuinely was a land of new freedom and opportunity, in contrast to which Britain seemed a stale and unfair environment. In Britain, the working man could earn enough money to survive, but he was always only a sacking or redundancy away from poverty. By contrast, emigrating to America meant starting out with nothing and living a sometimes difficult existence; however, the chance eventually to become a self-made man made this a worthwhile risk. At the time Barnaby was writing, it was the ability to achieve personal, financial independence which characterised American life.
