Desperate times: Writing a Diary

Instructions

You are now going to write a diary based on the story of the Desperate times of the Davies family.

  1. Using a whiteboard or computer, work through the story of David Davies and his family.
  2. Every time you make a choice, print off the page of the story which comes up. Number each page in the order they occur 1, 2, 3 and so on. Page 1 is the page which begins, 'How should David Davies provide for his family?'.
  3. The story could finish happily, or the family end up in the workhouse, or they are left in the same situation as they were at the start. When you reach the end, read instruction 4.
  4. Now imagine you are one of the children in the Davies family. Write a diary entry for each page describing what is happening to the family and how you feel about it. The first entry (for page 1) is done for you.

The following words are part of a made-up storyIt was very cold again today. Yesterday I went outside to play in the snow, and mother told me off when I came back because my clothes were all wet. She said we did not have enough logs to put on the fire during the day, and I would have to wait till the evening to get them dry

The following words are part of a made-up storyWe didn't have much to eat last night. The last meat from the sheep father found last week has now gone; yesterday we had thin mutton stew with a piece of bread. I hope one of us can find work soon.
