7. Your turn now
Suggested task:
Having looked through all of this information about workhouses, you should have lots of ideas about what you would like to see happen to the Davies family whilst they are in the workhouse. You could write about the whole family's experiences, or look at the life of one of the children or one of the parents.
You've learnt:
- about the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act
- that not everyone who wanted to go into the workhouse was admitted
- that some people got jobs which meant they didn't have to stay at the workhouse
- what happened when people first went into the workhouse
- what the workhouse was like
- about what people did all day
- a little about what they ate
- a little about what happened to the children at Cross Houses workhouse.
You could also imagine what games the children had to play in the workhouse or what their school was like.
It's now up to you: using what you know, you could finish off the rest of the story, describing what happened to the Davies family when they arrived at the door of the workhouse.
