The Shrewsbury tour
The Shrewsbury photo tour
A short photo tour through some of the sites in
Shrewsbury where John Mapp would have progressed
on his way to the gallows. The notable absentee is the old Shire
Hall on The Square. Built in 1836-37, the Shire Hall had two
courts available for the Shropshire Assizes, the court which
tried the Catherine Lewis case. It stood to the left of the
square as you face the Old Market House. It was controversially
demolished in 1971.
We start in Belmont, in the centre of Shrewsbury. Grid

The Judges' Lodging. Built in 1701 in Belmont, the
"fashionable new street of the eighteenth century" (Pevsner).
Used as accommodation by the circuit judges whilst hearing cases
at the assizes. Judge Sir Fitzroy Kelly would have stayed here
during the trial. It was rented out when the judges were not in
residence. It is now a private house.

Detail of pediment and motif above door to Judges' Lodging. It
shows the Shrewsbury Borough crest and was probably a twentieth
century addition.

Swan Hill, site (on the left) of the old purpose built
Shrewsbury Borough Police Station from 1900. The borough police
had previously been next to the Music Hall in The Square. The
County Headquarters of the Shropshire Constabulary can be seen on
the left further up the road.
