Read or walk a Victorian crime

This is the turnpike near Longden where John Mapp, Catherine Lewis, Jane Richards and Mary Hartshorn walked to on the night of the murder. The chapel is back towards Longden (top left in the photograph). Mary Hartshorn turned right towards the Oaks (bottom left), the others turning left down the Long Lane (top right).

A crossroads in the countryside. A metal gate the other side leads to a green field. [Opens in new window: image size 25kb]

To compliment the learning theme Murderous Mapp a photo tour of the main sites of the case has been compiled. Using the transcripts of the contemporary newspaper reports of the murder of Catherine Lewis and the execution of John Mapp, along with the maps provided, you may enjoy exploring the locations yourself.

There are two tours available; a short one in Shrewsbury, where you'll see the site of the old police station, the Judges Lodgings' and the place of execution and a longer tour of Longden, where the main events of the murder took place. Read through the Murderous Mapp theme, print out the transcript relevant to the tour, print out the map and go exploring!

You may wish to use a full Ordnance Survey map on your walk, we recommend:
OS Explorer 1:25000, Sheet 241.

You can borrow this from most Shropshire libraries, or see the Ordnance Survey online. A street map of Shrewsbury can be downloaded from Streetmap.co.uk.
