Polesworth

Warwickshire village, 4 miles SE of Tamworth.

Sir Henry Goodere (1534-1595), a patron of the poet Michael Drayton (1563-1631) and friend of Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586), lived at Polesworth Hall, erected on the site of a Benedictine Abbey. Wider literary patronage continued with the succession, from 1595 until 1627, of a second Sir Henry Goodere and this has led to commentators referring to a "Polesworth Circle". Visitors to the Hall are thought to have included John Donne (1572-1631), the architect, Inigo Jones (1573-1652) and the dramatist, Ben Jonson (1572-1637) who collaborated with Inigo Jones in court masques.

The chronicler Raphael Holinshed (d. 1580?) is thought to have been a steward at nearby Bramcote Hall.
