Shropshire hill, 2 miles SW of Wellington.
Possibly Shropshire's most famous landmark, the Wrekin rises to over 1,300 feet but seems even higher from certain angles as it towers over the low lying land beneath it. Of course it has its expected quota of folk tales connected with it and has received frequent mentions in literary works of one sort or another. Perhaps it will suffice here to recall that old Shropshire toast "To all friends round the Wrekin" and note that the dramatist George Farquhar (1678-1707) used this as the dedication to his play The Recruiting Officer (1706).
