Worcestershire village, 2 miles NE of Great Malvern.
Madresfield Court, set in a large park, was the home of the Lygon family and the Earls Beauchamp. The novelist Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966) was a frequent visitor after becoming friends with Hugh Lygon at Oxford. Many of the characteristics of the house and its occupants were reproduced in his novel Brideshead Revisited (1945). Lord Marchmain is partly modelled on the 7th Earl, once Governor of New South Wales, and later the leader of the Liberal Party in the House of Lords. The Victorian walled garden is now a thriving commercial nursery and garden centre.
