Longnor

Shropshire village, 6 miles S of Shrewsbury.

The great linguist Samuel Lee (1783-1852) was born and grew up in the village. He was apprenticed as a joiner in Shrewsbury and bought and exchanged Latin texts out of his meagre wages. As a result he went on to academic studies and was ordained into the church.
