Cleobury Mortimer

Shropshire village, 10 miles E of Ludlow.

This village is notable for a church with crooked spire.

Simon Evans (1895-1940) came to live here after the First World War and used Cleobury Mortimer and the surrounding area in his stories.

William Langland (1331?-1400) was possibly born here - the church has a plaque and memorial window to the author of Piers Plowman.

The poet John Moultrie (1799-1874) spent his childhood here at Vicarage House, which he recalled in Book I of his Dream of Life.

Henry Treece (1911-1966) taught at The College, Cleobury Mortimer during 1935. His future wife, Mary Woodman, was a geography teacher at the school.
