Charlecote

Warwickshire village, 1 mile NE of Wellesbourne.

Charlecote Park was the seat of the Lucy family and Sir Thomas Lucy is said to have been the model for the character of Justice Shallow who appears in the plays Henry IV and The merry wives of Windsor, by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Shakespeare is thought to have been caught poaching on the estate. Inspiration, perhaps, for the poaching scene between Falstaff and Shallow in the latter play.
