Broughton

Staffordshire hamlet, 5 miles E of Market Drayton.

This small hamlet, in the parish of Eccleshall, consists of just the church, dedictated to St.Peter, and Broughton Hall, a fine Elizabethan country house. Broughton Hall was the home of the Delves-Broughton family from the 13th century until it was sold at the end of the First World War. It was given to the Franciscan Missionaries of St. Joseph in 1952 but is now owned by the Staffordshire multi-millionaire John Caudwell, who is restoring it. It was home to the novelist Rhoda Broughton (1840-1920) from an early age until her father died when she was twenty-three. She used the setting in several of her works, including Cometh up as a flower (1867).
