Staffordshire village, 4 miles ESE of Cheadle.
Dominated by Alton Towers, a mansion formerly belonging to the Earl of Shrewsbury but now renowned for its theme park in the grounds. Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) depicted it as Muriel Towers in one of his later works, Lothair (1870).
