Frances Pitt

1888-1964

Profile

Naturalist, photographer and writer; born at Oldbury Grange, Bridgnorth. Frances Pitt wrote numerous books and articles on country life and was a highly respected pioneer among wildlife photographers. Her Country Years (1961) is a delightful autobiography providing many snippets of Shropshire life from the 1890's onwards with fond memories of local characters, of her own father's hair-raising driving in a Tin Lizzie Ford (all too easily distracted by observations on fields and hedgerows!) and above all of her beloved Shropshire countryside. Frances Pitt lived in Shropshire throughout her life. Her family moved from Oldbury Grange to a nearby farm called Westwood in 1892 and then to The Albyns, three miles south of Bridgnorth, in 1903. She lived here for over fifty years until moving for the last time in 1958 to Castle House, Harley, near Much Wenlock.
