1952 -
Novelist. Born in Devon, Clare moved to Birmingham as a student and now lives and works in the area. As well as working as a music teacher, she has just had great success with her first novel Astonishing splashes of colour published by Tindal Street Press. This novel reflects her interest in the dynamics of family life and synaesthesia - a condition in which emotions can be seen as colours and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction 2003.
Although it is her first novel to be published, Clare has had an unpublished literary career spanning 20 years, having previously sent off four other novels to publishers, all of which were rejected. She found success with Tindal Street Press, a small publishing house based in Birmingham. Clare's advance for the novel was £2,000 and the initial print run of 2,000 copies soon proved inadequate to meet the demand generated by the book being shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.
She is currently writing her second novel - this time exploring emotional and physical isolation - the main character being a man who lives in a lighthouse.
