Robert Bage

1730-1801

Profile

Novelist. A Derbyshire papermaker who lived in Elford, Staffordshire from 1751. He was interested in the cultural and scientific discussions taking place at that time in and around Birmingham. Robert Bage was a great friend of William Hutton (1723-1815), the well known figure from that city. William's daughter Catherine Hutton (1756-1846) wrote a memoir of Robert Bage for Sir Walter Scott, in the series of works published as Ballantyne's Novelist's library. He wrote six novels, the last of which Hermsprong, or man as he is not (1796), is probably his best work. It tells of a young man brought up by American Indians and thus without the advantages of what was accepted as civilised behaviour. When he enters into English society many of his refreshing characteristics and views are at odds with the conventions of the day.
