Oswestry


Shropshire town, 7 miles SW of Ellesmere.

Shirley Brooks (1816-1874) the novelist and editor lived and worked in the town as a young man.

Gavin Gibbons (1922-1978), traveller, linguist and author, lived at Holly Bank, off Mount Road, from 1931 to 1937. His father James Francis Gibbons (1890-1957) was Headmaster of the Boys' High School from 1931 to 1956.

Isaac Hughes (1815-1887) was the son of an Oswestry master shoemaker who followed in his father's trade, but was at the same time a prolific poet. Some of his work was published, and one of his poems won a prize in a national competition. He lived for some time in Beatrice Street, and was buried in Oswestry Cemetery.

Wilfred Owen (1893-1918), arguably the finest poet of the First World War, was born at a house called Plas Wilmot in Weston Lane.

Thomas Netherton Parker (died 1848), gentlemen writer, lived at Sweeney Hall.

Barbara Pym (1913-1980), the highly acclaimed novelist, was born at 72 Willow Street and lived for many years at the family home, Morda Lodge in Morda Road.

Richard Richards (19th century), schoolmaster and minor poet, kept schools in Croxon's Square and Willow Street.

William Archibald Spooner (1844-1930), best known for his lapses of speech known as Spoonerisms, was educated at Oswestry School.
