Staffordshire town, 14 miles NW of Stafford.
Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) completed his schooling at the Middle School and called the town Oldcastle in his novels.
Vera Brittain (1896-1970), novelist, was born here.
Dinah Maria Mulock (1826-1887), who wrote under her married name of Mrs. Craik, lived in the town from 1831 in Lower Street and Mount Pleasant and attended Brampton House Academy.
John Wain (1925-1994), novelist, poet and literary critic, attended Newcastle-under-Lyme Grammar School
