Warwickshire town, 2 miles E of Warwick.
The town owes its fame and growth to the spa waters which were promoted from the end of the 18th century. Many literary figures visited and stayed in the town to take the waters, including John Ruskin (in 1841), Nathaniel Hawthorne (in 1858) and Ambrose Bierce (in 1874). Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was a frequent visitor and set a scene in his novel Dombey and son (1848) in the town.
The poet, novelist and literary critic D.J. Enright (1920-2002) was born here, the son of a local postman.
