The Vaughan family owned much of the land around Kington and their seat was at nearby Hergest Court. It was a great centre of Welsh Culture and bardic poetry. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is thought to have been inspired by the story of a black hound roaming the area since the fifteenth century following a murder committed by Ellen Vaughan at an archery tournament. The tombs of Thomas Vaughan and his wife Ellen are in St Mary's Church, Kington.
Isobel Lambot (1926-2001), crime novelist, lived in Kington from 1975 until her death in 2001.
