Carola

by Hesba Stretton

Introduction

Carola has been brought up by her grandmother, living in a tiny room above the shoe-mender's shop owned by Matthias Levi. He teaches her the Bible and has hopes that she will adopt his Jewish faith, but her inquisitive mind eventually leads her to making her way in the world as a schoolteacher, many miles away from the East End slums. Carola finds herself on very friendly terms with the old established family at the Grange and inevitably the son and heir, Philip Arnold, falls for Carola. His parents have grave reservations concerning their different status in society. Carola, however, realises that she must return to Matthias and sort out some troubles from her past life. She becomes a nurse and a chance encounter changes the fortunes of the Arnolds, allowing Philip and Carola to see each other again. A simple story, full of coincidence, that is spoilt, somewhat, for the modern reader by its heavy reliance on biblical reference and quotation.

The Rector... standing just within the door of the little shop (Chapter 5) When he reached the porch all the roof was alight (Chapter 12) The old Jew...clung to Carola's arm as they walked slowly down the silent street (Chapter 20) They drove home together in the gig (Chapter 30)
