Nell Le Strange is captivated by Dick McGregor, a dashing army officer but is forced to marry a rich and older suitor, Sir Hugh, partly thought the scheming of her sister. Dolly, is the darling of society, with her elegance and charm, but underneath she is selfish and calculating. Although Nell has not been blessed with the finest looks and her manner is not at all refined, the reader empathises with her plight.
