Martin Crook and the lost purse

by Mary Martha Sherwood

Introduction

This is one of Mrs. Sherwood's Moral and Family Tales, fervently religious and moral short stories written for children, in which their own innate sinfulness is emphasised, as well as the dire consequences which will befall them if they slip from the path of rigorous Christian virtue. The Tales sold in large numbers, and were extremely popular (among well-meaning adults) as Sunday school prizes and Sunday reading in God-fearing households.

Review

A purse is lost, and a poor but honest young boy is accused of theft, and sent to Coventry until his honesty is finally proved, thanks--according to Mrs. Sherwood--to divine intervention.

His young heart, which had been frozen up with unkindness, was now melted by this new instance of God's goodness in bringing such full and public proof of his innocence.

Apart from financial security for himself and his mother, Martin's reward for his honesty and truthfulness is to be sent to a good school (in the village): not perhaps a reward which would appeal overmuch to the young reader.
