Johnny Ludlow; Sixth series

by Mrs. Henry Wood

Introduction

The final collection of Johnny Ludlow stories appeared in book form in 1899, twelve years after Mrs. Henry Wood's death, and included stories that had not been published during her lifetime. Selected stories are introduced below.

Does the large freshly-dug patch in the garden of Caramel Cottage have anything to do with the disappearance of Edgar Reste? And where has Don the dog gone?

The crime in The mystery at number seven is even grimmer: a housemaid is found dead, presumed murdered. The house itself has a reputation for being haunted.

A tragedy begins with a familiar enough scenario. A banknote sent through the post in a sealed envelope mysteriously disappears, throwing suspicion on raffish MacEveril and--for a while--on Tod. A suicide and two genuine ghostly appearances give this story an unusually sombre ending.

(With thanks for additional information from Michael Flowers).
