Johnny Ludlow; Fifth series

by Mrs. Henry Wood

Introduction

The fifth series of Johnny Ludlow stories appeared in book form in 1890, three years after Mrs. Henry Wood's death.

The ebony box has the familiar theme of a valuable item which goes missing, in mysterious circumstances. A young man who has run up debts and is the last person to admit seeing the box comes under suspicion...

In Our first term at Oxford Johnny and Tod go up to university and meet again with Sophie Chalk (see Series 1). They also meet a pious university scout with a mysterious history. It seems that Tod is going to the bad, as he accumulates gambling debts, and Sophie's involvement with Miss Deveen's missing emeralds is recalled.

(With thanks for additional information from Michael Flowers).
