The fourth series of Johnny Ludlow stories appeared in book form in 1890, three years after Mrs. Henry Wood's death, although the stories in it had all been published in periodicals during her lifetime.
In A mystery, a disappearance remains unexplained. Was it murder? There are dreams and forebodings, and a patch of ground where a murdered man's blood once fell, and where nothing will now grow. The mystery in Sandstone Torr is eventually resolved, but not before a good man is driven mad by the demon drink, and the neighbourhood is terrified by nocturnal noises.
Roger Bevere is a young medical student who makes a foolish marriage and lives in fear of discovery.
