The third series of popular short stories featuring Johnny Ludlow appeared in book form in 1885, and was the last series published in Mrs. Henry Wood's lifetime. Some earlier stories are included alongside more recent ones.
Jellico's pack is a straightforward account of working-class wives getting into debt through buying on credit.
In The mystery of Jessy Page, a flirtatious and naïve young girl disappears and returns eventually a broken woman. What happened to her in the intervening years remains a mystery.
Caromel's Farm, Charlotte and Charlotte, and The last of the Caromels form one long story of rural marriage, bigamy, inheritance and ghosts. Bigamy also ruins a woman's life in The story of Dorothy Grape (in two parts). There is an interesting overlap between these stories and others in the Johnny Ludlow series, as characters re-appear in each other's tales.
