Johnny Ludlow; First series

by Mrs. Henry Wood

Introduction

The First Series of the Johnny Ludlow stories appeared in book form in 1874, and includes some of the earliest, written between 1868 and 1872). Of these, three Sophie Chalk, At Miss Deveen's and The game finished form one continuous story concerning the theft of some jewellery, and also contain an early personification of the artful deceitful woman who will reappear in many of the later stories and novels. Coming home to him contains the dénouement of the story of crime and social injustice begun in Major Parrifer. Wolf Barrington's taming and A hunt by moonlight both describe tragic events among schoolboys.

Dick Mitchel (which highlights the problems of rural poverty and child labour) and Our strike (hardship among striking workers) are good examples of Mrs. Henry Woods' interest in social problems. Responsibility for a fatal railway accident is laid at the door of Lease, the pointsman, while another, less tragic, event takes place in a railway carriage in Going through the tunnel.

In Aunt Dean we meet an interfering elderly relative (a type who reappears many times in the short stories and novels), and in Going to the mop a romance among farmworkers is also disrupted by outside intervention.

(With thanks for additional information from Michael Flowers).
