This novel is one of the many that Emma Jane Worboise wrote which had an evangelistic slant.
Nouveau riche Constance's father is ambitious for his daughter. He goes to great lengths to fulfil that ambition at the expense of his daughter's needs. Debt-laden Percy's father goes to great lengths to recapture his status in life even resorting to unfair and underhand methods. These fathers between them manage to instigate a love triangle between Percy, Emmeline and Constance.
Handsome Percy is besotted and blinded by love of Emmeline. He goes to great lengths to have the best of both worlds. Exquisitely beautiful Emmeline loves Percy but not sufficiently to put aside more wealthy prospects in other quarters. She goes to great lengths to acquire the fame and fortune that she wants. Fair Constance is modest, refined and patient and loves Percy. She goes to great lengths to win what she has never had.
Typical of Victorian novels, most vices and virtues are to be found in these and other characters. So we have pride, selfishness, debt, prejudice, greed, arranged marriage, fraud, bribery and adultery. We also have love, loyalty, confession, humility and an abundant supply of patience.
