by Mary Webb
Unfinished at the time of Mary Webb's early death, Armour wherein he trusted was published posthumously. Set in medieval Shropshire, it is the story of Gilbert of Polrebec, who is torn between between his love for Nesta and a spiritual calling, and grasps at each in turn. There is less sense of the natural landscape than in Mary Webb's previous novels, and she writes in a stylised and artificial style, very unlike that of her other works.
